Bavaria, Kingdom. A Rare Order Of Theresa In Gold And Diamonds, Awarded To A German Reigning Queen

(Theresien-Orden, Ordenskreuz mit Brillanten). Instituted on 12 December 1827. (1827-1918 Issue). A Gold Maltese cross, with blue-enamelled cross arms bordered in white enamel, in the corners of the cross are lozenges with the blue and white arms of Bavaria, the obverse centre presents the letter T constructed of small diamonds over a field of white enamels with green enamel detailing, the reverse centre presents the date 1827, circumscribed by the motto UNSER LEBEN SEY GLAUBE AN DAS EWIGE (OUR LIFE IS FAITH IN ETERNITY), surmounted by a silver crown with numerous genuine old European cut diamonds of varying sizes (all of fine quality, all together weighing approximately 1.75 carats), maker marked with initials EQ for Eduard Quellhorst, München, measuring 42.07mm (w) x 75.90mm (h – inclusive of crown suspension), weighs 26.9 grams (inclusive of ribbon), worn on the original bow ribbon that is tattered and discoloured, an exceedingly rare and superbly crafted decoration in extremely fine condition.

Contained in a privately made case, the exterior presenting a red leatherette case with golden detailing on the lid, the interior presents a crème-coloured silk lid with removable silk pillow in the base, measures 192mm (length) x 125mm (width) x 44mm (depth), light wear to corners and edges, in overall very fine condition.

Accompanied by a full-length silk sash of the order (measuring 65mm in width), also in very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order was established on December 12, 1827 by Queen Therese of Bavaria as an order for noble ladies in the kingdom. The Queen established a fund, which annually paid a pension of 100 to 300 guilders to twelve unmarried noble ladies. The pension ceased upon a recipients marriage, however, if the marriage was in line with the rank of the lady, then she was permitted to continue wearing the Order’s insignia and be known as a Lady of Honour.

An Order of Theresa in Gold and Diamonds was awarded to a reigning Queen, therefore identifying several possible recipients.
