Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Enlisted Personnel M40 Field Cap

(Waffen-SS Schiffchen M40 für Mannschaften). A Waffen-SS Enlisted personnel M40 field cap, constructed of field-grey wool. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down walls which slope downward toward the peak. Visible on the former is the unmistakable outline of an SS-style eagle insignia which has been removed from the cap, resulting in some disruption of the underlying wool and leaving the remains of period stitching embedded in the material. Directly below the peak, the cap similarly demonstrates the removal of an embroidered Totenkopf insignia, resulting in some loss of material consequent to stitch extraction. The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece grey cotton liner. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 28 cm (w) x 12 cm (h) when folded on a flat surface. The cap demonstrates some issues consistent with age and wear in addition to the missing insignia, including minor material fatigue throughout the exterior wool, as well as soiling and fraying of the interior liner. This field-worn example remains in a very fine condition.
