Description
Description
(Preußen Metalhelm M1915 für Mannschaften der Kürassiere). A Prussian-issue Model 1915 Kürassier Metalhelm (Metal Helmet), constructed of a magnetic steel shell. The crown is topped by a magnetic matte steel oval disc secured in position with four domed rivets. A protruding shaft emerges from the centre of the disc, perforated around the outer circumference with ventilation holes, accommodating the addition of a spike which has been lost to time. Clipped to the peak is an magnetic matte steel insignia in the form of a vaulted Prussian imperial eagle clutching an orb and sceptre, and overlaid across the chest by a banner bearing an inscriptions of “MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND” (“WITH GOD FOR KING AND FATHERLAND”), measuring 13 cm (w) x 10.5 cm (h). Magnetic metal studs flank the sides of the helmet, each retaining a magnetic metal cockade measuring 64 mm in diameter, with the left side painted in an Imperial red, white, and black tri-colour, and the right side painted in a Prussian black and white motif. The studs retain an original chinstrap which is adjusted with two brass buckles situated just below the studs. A short, curved visor emerges from the front of the helmet, while cascading “lobster tail” neck guard extends downward from the back, with structural integrity maintained by eleven domed rivets, at a near-90 degree angle in a fashion characteristic of this manufacturer. A magnetic matte reinforcement fully trims the rim to provide a smooth edge throughout. The reverse of the visor is painted in a standard dark green, while the neck guard presents in black. An original light brown leather liner encompasses the interior and culminates in nine fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet through which is looped an original drawstring. The crown bears a double-stamped maker’s mark of “LACHMANN, BERLIN”, while the neck guard is stamped with a mark of “54”. Issues consistent with age and field wear are evident, and includes surface oxidation throughout the exterior of the shell, some denting to the crown shaft, and material fatigue to the leather fixtures. This unmodified, wartime example remains in a very fine condition.
