Measuring 101x150mm, near mint condition. The print shows Scholz in the rank of SS-Obersturmführer wearing the Knight’s Cross. He signed the picture on the reverse in blue ink.
Footnote: Helmut Scholz was born on July 12, 1920 in Grottkau, Upper Silesia (present-day Grodków, southern Poland). He joined the SS as a volunteer in late 1937 and was placed in the 3rd Company of SS-Standarte “Germania”. The next year he was redeployed to SS-Standarte “Der Führer”. After training at the SS-Junkerschule in Brunswick Scholz was promoted to SS-Unterscharführer in September 1939. He saw action in France in 1940. Afterwards he was redeployed once more and joined the 1st Company of SS Regiment “Wiking” with which he took part in the attack on Russia. After another course at the SS-Junkerschule in late 1941 Scholz was SS-Untersturmführer in June 1942. At the same time he took command of a platoon in the 3rd Battalion of SS Regiment Nordland at the Eastern Front. His next deployment was to the 49th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment “De Ruyter” in the 23rd SS Division “Nederland” in 1943. In March of 1944, Scholz took command of the 7th Company of the regiment. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross on June 4, 1944 for his leadership role in the Battle for the Narva Bridgehead. In August Scholz took command of the 2nd Battalion, stationed northwest of Lake Peipus. He received the Oak Leaves on September 21, 1944. His final promotion came in January of 1945 when he became an SS-Hauptsturmführer. Scholz died on November 12, 1997.
