Canada, CEF. A Pocket Watch presented to First War Soldier Private James Wilfred Columbus

Functioning, Gold-filled casing, weighing 76.8 grams inclusive of its chain, the white porcelain face with bold numerals in black, a ring above marked with black rules in intervals of sixty minutes, the hour and minute hands in black, the "6" position obscured by the inset second hand clock with a black secondhand, maker marked "ELGIN" on the face, covered by a glass crystal, large engraved script initials "WC" on the back cover, marked "SOVEREIGN" above a maple leaf bearing an "E" and "GOLD FILLED / 218954" on the inside back cover, engraved "PRESENTED TO Pte. Wilfred Columbus BY THE TOWNSHIP OF WALPOLE FOR SERVICES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" on the internal works cover, measuring 47 mm (w) x 58.55 mm (h) inclusive of its stem, incorporating a full length fine link chain, ring suspension, very light contact, better than very fine. 

Footnote: James Wilfred Columbus was born on March 23, 1896. He was a resident of Jarvis, Ontario when he signed his Particulars of Recruit Drafted Under Military Service Act 1917 Paper (Military Service letter and No. 791283, Brantford), as a Private (3310865) at the age of 22, at Brantford, Ontario, on May 10, 1918, naming hisd next-of-kin as his mother, Mary Columbus, stating he had no previous military service, that he was Single, that his religion was Roman Catholic and that his trade was that of Farmer. He embarked Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 2, 1918, arriving in Liverpool, England on the 15th. Upon arrival in England, he was posted to the 8th Reserve Battalion. Upon the cessation of hostilities, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Central Ontario Reinforcement Depot on reporting to "H" Wing at Canadian Corps Camp, Witley. He was struck off strength to Canada, departing Tilbury on September 6, 1919 and arriving in Halifax on the 14th. Private James Wilfred Columbus was discharged upon demobilization at No. 2 District Depot in Toronto, Ontario, on September 17, 1919.
