Description
Description
(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A rare and well-preserved Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with both edges and tip demonstrating factory-original sharpening. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso notably bears a maker’s mark of “ALBERT MEBUS, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s plain monogram logo, indicating production by a rarely-encountered early manufacturer. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. Stamped onto the reverse of the ricasso is a mark of “NM”, indicating distribution to SA-Gruppe Nordmark (corresponding to Schleswig-Holstein). A single piece of lacquered dark brown wood composes the handle, and is carved into a curvature for a firm and comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse ricasso is a partially-silvered SA logo measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger completes with a nickel-silver lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which is held in place with an original rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal. Nickel-silver fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets. An integral loop emanates from the throat for the accommodation of a hanger, while an intact spring clip inside the throat holds the dagger in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks and tarnishing to the blade, a small chip to the reverse pommel which has been carefully covered with matching paint, a larger chip to the reverse pommel (with the wood fragment retained for optional restoration), a small dent to the scabbard tip fixtures, and minor loss of paint to the scabbard shaft. This early and exceptionally rare example, which is one of approximately only 1,000 produced by the firm of Albert Mebus, remains in an overall near extremely fine condition.
