Description
Description
(Sturmabteilung Dienstrock und Stiefelhose für einen Sturmführer). A Sturmabteilung (SA) service uniform, consisting of:
1. A tunic constructed of olive-drab cotton cloth, featuring a turned-down collar which transitions into double breast lapels. The former is flanked by tabs, each constructed of crimson wool with buckram cores, and trimmed with white and crimson striped piping. The right side district tab is pinned with non-regulation metal numerals “11/117”, while the left side rank tab is pinned with three silvered pips, indicating a rank of SA-Sturmführer. The right shoulder retains a single gilded button, marked on the reverse with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M5/164” for Hillenbrand & Broer, Lüdenscheid. The cuff of each sleeve features a vertical slit closing with two hidden bakelite buttons meeting a single reinforced buttonhole for an adjustable fit. Four pockets are set into the breast flaps, all closing with scalloped flaps perforated with reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled magnetic metal buttons. Two sets of threaded loops are set into and above the top left pocket for the accommodation of badges with vertical and horizontal pinbacks, respectively. It closes with four pebbled magnetic metal buttons on the right side meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes. All pocket and flap buttons are marked on the reverse with an RZM logo and maker code “M5/9” for Matthias Oechsler & Sohn, Ansbach. The interior features a partial beige cotton/rayon blended liner distributed throughout, which includes two straps that descend from the armpits and which are perforated with six reinforced eyelets for the accommodation of a belt hanger. A narrow pocket is set onto the lower right breast flap. A white cotton label is stitched onto the left strap, and bears a partially-legible stamped mark featuring numerals “06/738”. Otherwise unmarked, the tunic measures approximately 43 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 58 cm, and an overall body length of 72 cm. Issues consistent with wear and modification are evident, and include the loss of one shoulder board button, with disturbance of the sleeve stitching consistent with insignia removed, the replacement of the collar tab numerals, the unexplained absence of collar piping, and minor fatigue throughout the base material. This interesting example remains in a very fine condition.
2. A pair of breeches, constructed of an identical olive-drab wool cloth. Six brown bakelite buttons are distributed around the waistband, while a French fly closes with four hidden buttons of identical construction. Two side pockets are set into the upper thighs, each closing with diagonal scalloped flaps perforated with two reinforced buttonholes meeting brown bakelite buttons, with additional pockets located at the upper right front leg and upper back right leg. Two integral side straps fasten closed with magnetic metal buckles. The seat is reinforced with an additional layer of olive-drab wool. Vertical slits are set into each ankle, closing with seven sets of dual eyelets, reinforced with magnetic metal grommets, retaining an original drawstring, and with three additional bakelite buttons. The interior of the waistband is partially encompassed by a white cotton/rayon blended cloth liner. Unmarked, the breeches measure approximately 41 cm across the waist, with an inseam of 33 cm, and an overall length of 93 cm. Minor material fatigue is visible, and includes four ankle grommets, but the breeches remain in an overall near extremely fine condition.
