Germany, SS. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, by Gottlieb Hammesfahr

(Schutzstaffel Dienstdolch M33). A very well-preserved Schutzstaffel (SS) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade retaining factory-original sharpening to the tip and edges. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “GOTTLIEB HAMMESFAHR, SOLINGEN-FOCHE”, circumscribing the firm’s pyramid logo. It sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. Stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard is a Roman numeral II (Dresden) or partially-visible Roman numeral III (Berlin). The handle grip is composed of a single piece of lacquered and black painted wood which is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Inset into the pommel is a silvered and black enameled SS insignia measuring mm in diameter. It completes with a nickel-silver lower crossguard which is similarly marked with eight notches, and which is secured in position with a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-silver fittings are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets. Emanating from the latter is an integral ring for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional spring catch situated within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade, scratching and fine cracking of the handle grip, scratching of the nickel-silver fixtures, and sporadic loss of scabbard paint. An early and high-quality example, this dagger remains in a near extremely fine condition.
