Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Officer’s Visor Cap

(Waffen-SS Schirmmütze für einen Offizier). A well-preserved Waffen-SS Officer’s service-grade visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool with a gentle whipcord weave. It features reinforced side walls fully lined on the exterior with a black doeskin cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with white wool piping, while an additional band of identical piping surrounds the outer edge of the crown. Notably, the crown’s interior wire reinforcement has been carefully removed, giving the cap a classic Sattelform (saddle shape) profile. The lower edge of the cap band is flanked on each side by a pebbled magnetic metal stud which retains a chinstrap constructed of multiple rows and twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire piping, adjusted with dual functional sliding knots. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in a glossed black on the obverse and in a glossed light brown on the reverse. A light brown leather sweatband surrounds the interior, and is perforated across the forehead with an array of ventilation holes to mitigate perspiration. The interior is fully encompassed by a beige oilcloth liner, while the crown retains a transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 23 cm (w) x 27 cm (l) x 18 cm (h). Both the eagle and Totenkopf insignia formerly adorning the peak and cap band, respectively, have been carefully removed, resulting in only minimal disruption to the underlying material, in addition to sporadic soiling of the interior liner, a privately-purchased example awaiting the addition of period insignia in extremely fine condition.
