Germany, Third Reich. A Memel Medal, Type I, by the Berlin Mint

(Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkehr des Memellandes mit Etui). Constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension from a postwar replacement ribbon, with the integral ring demonstrating the classic off-centre situation characteristic of this variation, the obverse bearing two raised figures, one of which is clutching a flag and the other a length of broken chain, the reverse bearing an inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE HEIMKEHR DES MEMELLANDES 22. MÄRZ 1939” (“IN MEMORY OF THE HOMECOMING OF MEMELLAND 22 MARCH 1939”), unmarked but demonstrating the characteristics of a Type I variant produced by the Berlin Mint, measuring 32.21 mm in diameter, weighing 14.1 grams, in extremely fine condition.
