Footnote:
Albert Rudolf Heilmann was born on 24 October 1897 in Markersdorf (Saxony). He joined the Kriegsmarine in January of 1915 and served in the 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment on the Western Front until the end of the war. Heilmann was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Saxon Friedrich August Medal in Bronze.
After the war, he joined the Freikorps (free corps) “Görlitz”, also known as Freikorps Faupel after its commander, or Schlesische Jäger-Brigade (Silesian hunter brigade), in February of 1919. Heilmann helped crush revolts in Magdeburg, Dresden, and Munich. In June, he became a member of the Wehrregiment München, another paramilitary organisation. It would eventually be used to form the police force of Munich, in which Heilmann enlisted in 1922 for 12 years. However, due to his service in the army and the Freikorps, of the 12 years he only had to serve four and a half, and was discharged in 1927.
Little is known about his service during the Second War, except that he was drafted again in September of 1939 to join the 2nd Mountain Division, with which he was stationed in Norway. At some point, Heilmann was taken prisoner and interned in a POW camp in France, from which he returned home in the spring of 1947.
