Description
(Altábornagy Nagykabát). An untouched wartime example having belonged to Magyarosy Sándor who had many central roles within the Ministry of Defense and Government during the Second War.
It is constructed of fine quality dark khaki-coloured wool, with the traditional turned-down collar lined on the obverse with reddish/brown doeskin and bearing two collar tabs, one per side. The collar tabs are constructed of red wool, the left tab bearing a laurel twig while the right bears an oak twig, both constructed of twisted and rolled gilt bullion wires, and with a decorative gilt button near the top bearing the Hungarian crown, measuring 5 cm (w) x 12 cm (h).
Both cuffs feature red piping near the bottom third where the cuff starts, while the right cuff decorated with two narrow and one broad strip of khaki-coloured tresse, with an additional wool patch directly above, featuring two laurel twigs that are tied together at the bottom, with a Hungarian crown in the center, the combination of which denotes the rank of Lieutenant General (Altábornagy).
This greatcoat features standard dual lapels, both lined with bright red wool, with the addition of an embroidered bead and loop at the neck of the collar for closing of the tunic during adverse wind and weather conditions.
Both sides of this greatcoat are adorned with six gilt buttons each, positioned in a vertical manner, and are met with reinforced buttonholes on the opposing sides. All buttons are constructed of gilt bronze with a leather core, and adorned on the obverse with the Hungarian crown.
At waist-height, in the front, is a single pocket per side, secured shut via a scalloped flap. The pockets are lined on the interior, featuring a horizontal slit within them in order to be accessed via both sides of this greatcoat.
At waist height but on the reverse are two decorative flaps that are lined with red piping along the edges, with a faux belt and the addition of two matching gilt buttons. It is otherwise unlined, except for the decorative strip of lining near the bottom, constructed of red diamond-quilted rayon.
This Hungarian greatcoat measures 47 cm across the shoulders (seam to seam), with a sleeve length of 65 cm, and an overall body length of 128 cm.
The exterior of this greatcoat is well preserved, with only minor material fatigue, with the inside showing period use and wear. Importantly, the coat is named on the interior left, "V.Magyarossy Sandor vezds"
Footnote: From 1921 Magyarosy Sándor was a subordinate of the Military Office of the Governor of Hungary, a position he held until 1926. Between 1932 and 1934 he was the deputy chief of staff of the 1st Mixed Brigade, and then from 1936 he became the actual chief of staff.
Between 1938 and 1940 he commanded the 2nd Border Patrol Brigade.
In 1940 he was the Chief of the Training Group of the Chief of Staff, and at the same time the national levente commander.
From 1942 he was the chief of the air group of the Ministry of Defense , until July 1, 1944. At that time he retired, but after the Arrow Cross cou , on November 5, he was reactivated, promoted to colonel general and became the Hungarian government commissioner in Germany in 1945 .
He fled to Germany from the Soviets, but was captured by the Americans, who extradited him to Hungary as a war criminal. On June 19 , 1945 , he was demoted and expelled from the army, and in 1946 he was sentenced to two years in prison. He emigrated to Argentina, then to the United States of America.
