Japan, Empire. An Order of the Sacred Crown, Fifth Class Medal with Case, c.1900

(宝冠章, Hōkan-shō) Institution Date: January 3, 1888 by Emperor Meiji.  A Japanese Order of the Sacred Crown, V Class. A silver gilt oval medallion with clusters of three enamelled cherry blossoms forming the four points of a star, center obverse presenting a silver gilt ancient Japanese Imperial Crown on an enamelled background, reverse plain, green enameled laurel suspension, measuring 45 mm (w) x 71 mm (h - inclusive of suspension with ball), accompanied by a bow ribbon and a rosette, near mint. 

The decoration is contained within its original case of issue, a black lacquer exterior with Japanese characters on the obverse, the interior with a purple silk lid and purple silk recessed medalbed, working hinge and catch, minor wear, in extremely fine condition. 

Footnote: This Order was established by Emperor Meiji. It is conferred in recognition of notable services. Originally it was awarded to Japanese and foreign women, and occasionally men. Now, it is conferred only upon members of the Imperial Family and foreign ladies of distinction.
