Japan, Empire. An Order of the Sacred Crown, V Class

(宝冠章, Hōkan-shō) Institution Date: January 3, 1888 by Emperor Meiji. A Japanese Order of the Sacred Crown, V Class. A silver gilt oval medallion with clusters of three enamelled cherry blossoms forming the four points of a star, center obverse presenting a silver gilt ancient Japanese Imperial Crown on an enamelled blue background, reverse plain. The decoration measures at 44mm (w) x 48mm (h), weighs 25.3 grams, accompanied by a period bow ribbon and minor wear to the reverse, missing its suspension entirely, in near better than fine condition.

Footnote: This Order was established by Emperor Meiji. It is conferred in recognition of notable services. Originally it was awarded to Japanese and foreign women, and occasionally men. Now, it is conferred only upon members of the Imperial Family and foreign ladies of distinction.
