(Atzinības Krusts). Re-Instituted in 1938. (1939-1940 issue). A silver gilt Maltese Cross with white enamelled arms and ball finials, with dual intertwined rings in the quadrants between the arms of the cross, the obverse with a central oval gilded medallion bearing the Coat of Arms of Latvia and dated “1938”, the reverse with a similar central oval gilded medallion bearing the Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia and dated “1710”, suspended from a suspension device consisting of eight intertwined rings from its period original ribbon featuring a modern replacement safety pin for attachment to a uniform, marked with the text “Pour les Honnêtes Gens” on the edges of the arms, measuring 35.8 mm (w) x 36.0 mm (l), weighing 22.65 grams.
With a medal ribbon bar with two ribbons; one for the Order of the Cross of Recognition with a miniature rosette on the ribbon, and one ribbon for a Home Guard Cross of Merit, with a horizontal pinback, measuring 72 mm (w) x 11 mm (l).
Accompanied by its presentation case, constructed of a lightweight wooden core with a lightly textured red faux leather exterior, the exterior of the lid with the Coat of Arms of Latvia embossed in silver, the interior of the lid with padded silk, with a functional exterior metal hinge, intact interior fabric hinge cover, and functional exterior metal clasp, with a recessed medal bed for plush seating of the award, measuring 78 mm (w) x 139 mm (l).
A fine grouping of an Order of the Cross of Recognition IV. Class with its ribbon bar and presentation case of issue, the cross with some of its original gilt finish coming off due to age and wear, in overall better than very fine condition.
Footnote: The Cross of Recognition was instituted on August 12, 1938 and is based on an award instituted on May 13, 1710 in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. It is awarded for outstanding love of the Fatherland and for achievements on behalf of the state, the people of Latvia, to Latvians and and foreigners for meritorious services within civil and military realms, and Latvian culture. Recipients were recognized for rendering service within the development of the military, patriotic endeavors, and championing public order and national security. It is awarded in four grades, along with five types of medals.
