(Viesturs Ordenis). Instituted in 1938. A rare military issue example in silver gilt featuring a white enameled cross with red accents, the suspension bearing the coat-of-arms in silver gilt with red, blue and green enamels, silver gilt swords in each quadrant, maker marked "V. MILLERS RIGA", Latvia National Control marked and marked with a female head with the Latvian crown beside the silver purity mark of "875" on the reverse of the suspension, measuring 43.9 mm (w) x 62 mm (h) inclusive of its coat-of-arms suspension, intact enamels, minor gilt wear evident on the reverse of the suspension, lightly soiled original ribbon with safety pin attachment, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Vesthardus (AKA Order of Viesturs) is a Latvian state order instituted on August 11, 1938, which fell into abeyance during the years of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, but was re-established on October 29, 2004 by the Republic of Latvia. The order is named after the medieval historical figure King Viesturs of ancient Semigallia. It is awarded for meritorious services in the development of the armed forces, safeguarding national security and social order, defending the borders and enhancing patriotism, in five classes: I Class Grand Cross, II Class Grand Officer, III Class Commander, IV Class Officer and V Class Knight, plus Medals in Gold, Silver and Bronze Grades.
