Description
(Орден Књаза Данила I/Orden Knjaza Danila I). Instituted 1853 by Danilo I, the first secular Prince of Montenegro. Type II (1861 -1918). In silver, a four-armed Ruppert Cross with convex ends, arms in white, red and blue enamels, obverse presenting a crowned cipher of Danilo I in silver gilt, circumscribed by “Danilo I, Prince of Montenegro” in gilded Cyrillic script on a blue-enamelled border, surrounded by a ring of red and white enamels, as well as an outer circle of silver sun rays, reverse presented similar design with centre dated “1852/1853”, circumscribed by “For independence of Montenegro” in Cyrillic script, suspended from princely crown with bandelettes in silver gilt, ring hallmarked Austro-Hungarian hallmark denoting silver purity of 750/1000 between 1872-1922, marked twice by maker’s mark of Rudolf Souval, Vienna, measuring 50.12 mm (w) x 74.34 mm (h - inclusive of crown suspension), with light wear to enamels, on original silk ribbon, near very fine.
Footnote: The Order of Danilo I was the first Montenegrin dynastic and state Order established by Prince Danilo Petrović Njegoš in 1853. It was instituted to commemorate the independence of Montenegro achieved in 1852-53. This decoration is still awarded in recognition of meritorious humanitarian, scientific, artistic and pro-social achievements.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
