Footnote:
Flight Engineer Noel Truman began in the RAF with No. 1656 HBCV Lindholme in late December 1943, flying in an “R” Halifax II. As of early February 1944, Truman completed 16 crash landings and dinghy drills, and 8 parachute drills during the course with No. 1656 Conversion Unit. After three days with the No. 1 Lancaster Finishing School, Truman joined No. 625 Squadron mid-February and began operations on February 20, 1944.
His recommendation for the Distinguished Flying Cross, made on August 16, 1944 stated “Pilot Officer TRUMAN is the Flight Engineer in a most gallant Lancaster aircrew and has now completed his tour of operations, consisting of 30 and 2 third sorties and 176 hours operational flying, and has consistently shown the highest qualities of skill and devotion to duty. He has participated in attacks on many of the most strongly defended targets in Germany including Cologne, Essen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. His skill in the handling of the engines in all the duties assigned to a Flight Engineer have proved of the greatest assistance to his Captain and the other members of the crew with whom he has completed a most successful tour. On the night of March 15th 1944 when attacking Stuttgart, the aircraft was intercepted by an M.E 410 which was damaged and probably destroyed by the guns of the aircraft, and the skill and co-operation of Pilot Officer Truman helped materially in the making the work of his Captain as easy as possible; and so probably destroying the enemy aircraft. The Officer has at all times shown a fine offensive spirit and devotion to duty and for the successes he has achieved I strongly recommend him for an award of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Wing Commander, Commanding No. 625 Squadron, RAF.”
By February 1945, Truman was a part of the No. 246 Squadron, Holmsley South. This squadron reformed October 11, 1944 at RAF Lyneham as a transport squadron and later moved to Holmsley South in December. By 1945, the Avro York was the standard aircraft, and routes to India and the Middle East were operational. Truman’s Logbook states that he transferred to No. 511 Squadron, Lynham on August 14, 1945. A small note is made in his logbook that he was married August 30, 1945, however records have not been found to confirm this. Truman continued flying after the war with the Transport Command. On October 15, 1946 No. 246 Squadron joined with No. 511 Squadron which focused particularly on flying troops between the UK and India. As of January 1, 1946 Truman was a certified Flight Engineer on York Aircraft carrying passengers, passing all texts of the 47 Group Air Staff Instructions. In March 1946, Truman flew with Pilot Leslie Graham, a famous motorcyclist who was later killed in 1953. As of June 18, 1946, his flying hours totaled 1761.35 hours (day - 756.00 and night - 405.35 hours).
Noel Truman’s father, Cecil Truman was born on September 15, 1895 and was employed as a printer prior to enlisting for the war in Nottingham on May 26, 1916. On November 1, 1916 he was stationed with the Plymouth 3rd Royal Mounted Battalion (PLY) and remained with this Light Infantry Division for the entirety of his service. Pte Truman was taken as a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Canal du Nord on September 28 1918 until December 6, 1918. This Battle took place from September 27, 1918 to October 1, 1918 during the Allies’ Hundred Days Offensive against German positions. The Royal Mounted Light Infantry were in Tadpole Copse when the barrage opened at 0505 on the 27th. They attacked as a three-company front (“A” “B” and “C”). The surprise offense attack proved successful for the allies, ultimately opening the road to Cambrai. Throughout his involvement, Truman’s general character was considered very good. His records state that he was a “repatriated P of W 12 December 1918.”
