Victoria. (Lieut Col J.A.Burton ) Rim has been shaved and privately re-engraved, fine.
Footnote: John Adolphus Burton, son of Charles Benjamin, was born December 10th 1854 at Rajahundy, INdia. On January 17th 1855, John was baptized at Black Town, Madras. BY 1879, he had graduated from the Universties of Madras and Edinburgh in medicine. The following year on October 2nd 1880, John entered the Madras at Netley from October 2nd 1880 to February 7th 1881 where he studied military surgical practices. On September 30 1887, John was placed in medical charge of the 7th Madras Native Infantry. By October 2nd 1892, John recieved the rank of surgeon Major while serving with the 7th.
With an interest in Chinese culture, John went to Peking in May 1899, to study the language. With the outbrack of hostilities in China, he remained serving with the 7th Madras until July 1902. During this period, John obtained the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant.
John returned to India where he remained with the 7th until 1905 when he was attached to the 67th Punjabis Infantry. John was then attached to the 83rd Light Infantry on March 14 1906 and remained with the unit until his retirement on December 6th 1910. With the outbreak of the First World War, he joined the services but remained in England. On January 24th 1924, Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel John Adolphus Burton died at Wallington at 70 years of age.
