1. "The Terrible NIght at Rorke's Drift - The Zulu War, 1879" by James W. Bancroft: hardcover, cherry red cloth cover, the text on the spine in gold-colored ink, with dust jacket, copyrighted by the author in 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1992, published in the United Kingdom in 1988 by Spellmount Limited of Speldhurst, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, fifth impression in 1993, also published in South Africa by Ashanti Publishing, printed and bound in Great Britain by Biddles Limited of Guildford and King's Lynn, ISBN 0-946771-94-4. As stated on the dust jacket: "This is a graphic account of how British men behaved as gallant soldiers in their struggle for survival, and Zulu natives fought as brave warriors in their efforts to overpower them, during the epic defence of the storehouse and field hospital at Rorke's Drift, Natal, at the beginning of the Zulu War in January 1879. It is the result of a close comparison and examination of over thirty eye-witness accounts and letters, together with an in-depth study of official reports, various journals, and the newspapers printed at the time of the war. The narrative has been written in a way that allows the reader to experience the events with the same feelings of uncertainty about the situation as did the defenders. The work expresses the comradeship and horror of hand-to-hand combat, and highlights the fighting spirit of the British soldier, as officers and men tried to cope with the terrible events thrust upon them. For this single action alone fifteen gallantry medals were awarded. The story brings to light and clarifies several new facts that have been overlooked in previous books about the battle, and is accompanied by a chapter of explanatory notes and biographies that go into considerable detail about the men who played the most prominent part in the defence of Rorke's Drift." It contains nine chapters: 1. Zulu Defiance; 2. The Wild Frontier; 3. 'When suddenly...'; 4. 'Here they come!'; 5. The Hospital Siege; 6. Behind the Entrenchment; 7. The Smoke Clears; 8. Revenge; 9. Notes and Tributes. It concludes with two Appendices, a Bibliography, a six page Index and an Acknowledgements & Credits. The book contains 168 pages, entailing 160 pages of text, graphics and photographs, printed in black ink, along with eight pages of colour plates (pages 81-88), printed in four-colour inks, all 160 pages on a white satin-finished paper stock, measuring 203 mm (w) x 277 (h) x 15.5 mm (d), near extremely fine.
