United States. A Pair of Medals Awarded to Fred N Yoarmay, USS Virginia

This lot includes two medals as well as the accompanying medal bar (with one silver star on the Victory Medal clasp):

1.A WW1 Victory Medal. In Bronze, the obverse shows a winged Victory, reverse inscription reads THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION with the coat of arms for the United States surmounted by a fasces, on both sides are the names of the Allied and Associated Nations, on original rainbow ribbon with one service clasp “Subchaser”, 36.3 mm, very fine condition. 

Footnote: An award of a common allied service medal was recommended by an inter-allied committee in March 1919. Each allied nation would design a 'Victory Medal' for award to their military personnel, all issues having certain common features, including a winged figure of victory on the obverse and the same ribbon. The Victory Medal was awarded to military personnel for service between April 6, 1917, and November 11, 1918, or with either of the following expeditions: American Expeditionary Forces in European Russia, and American Expeditionary Forces Siberia. 

2. A U.S. Marine Corps 1911-1917 Mexico Campaign Medal. In bronze, the obverse shows the San Juan de Ulúa fortress in Veracruz harbor, surrounded by the inscription MEXICO 1911-1917, included is the engraved words USS VIRGINIA, the reverse features a spread eagle resting upon an anchor with a draped chain, surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES NAVY FOR SERVICE, included above the eagle is the engraving “Fred N Yoarmay Scaman”, numbered 13597 on the edge, original ribbon, 33 mm, extremely fine condition.
