Footnote: John H. Karlsberg was born on July 12, 1876 in Stockholm, Stockholms kommun, Stockholms län, Sweden. He enlisted at the age 21 years, 10 months in the United States Army, on May 13, 1898 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and served with 6th Cavalry, Company F, in the Hospital Corps in Cuba during the Spanish American War. He was discharged on February 17, 1899 at Huntsville, Alabama with the rank of Private. He was issued the Army Spanish Campaign Medal in 1908 for service in Cuba with the Hospital Corps and the Army of Cuban Occupation Medal in 1937 for service with Troop E, 6th Cavalry. He was a resident of Seattle, Washington when he registered for the First World War draft, on September 12, 1918. Karlberg was a member of numerous organizations, including: the Military Order of the Serpent, the Army & Navy Union, the United Spanish War Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Eighth Corps, the Reserve Officers Association, the American Legion, and the National Sojourners. In his civilian life, his regular occupation was that of Painter, having blue eyes and a light complexion. He was married for many years to Ebba Victoria Holmquist Karlberg (born August 17, 1884 in Kansas). John H. Karlberg died on February 28, 1958 in Seattle, King County, Washington, at the age of 81 and is buried in Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park, Seattle, King County, Washington, in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery's Pearl Harbor Section. His wife, Ebba Victoria Holmquist Karlberg died on October 22, 1983, in Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington, at the age of 99. She is buried in Washington Veterans Home Cemetery in Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington, Section 35, Plot 10.
