(Ordine Equestre di San Gregorio Magno). Instituted September 1st, 1831. In 18kt Yellow Gold, consisting of a Maltese Cross with ball finials, the obverse with a central blue enameled circular disc bearing the leftward facing bust of St. Gregory in Gold, surrounded by a Golden ring inscribed ““Gregorius Magnus” in capitalized lettering, the reverse with a similar central blue enameled circular disc inscribed “Pro Deo et Principe” (For God and Ruler) in capitalized lettering, circumscribed “Gregorius” in matching capitalized lettering, surmounted by a laurel wreath with green enameled leaves and a swivel ring for suspension from its period-original tri-fold ribbon, marked “VM” on the ring for manufacture by Vincent Mayer’s Sons, measuring 36.4 mm (w) x 54.3 mm (l), weighing 12.88 grams, a fine quality Austrian-made award, in near mint condition.
Accompanied by its matching presentation case, constructed of a lightweight wooden core, wight a dark burgundy and lightly textured faux leather (leatherette) exterior, the exterior of the lid embossed with the Vatican Coat of Arms in gilt, the interior of the lid lined in padded silk and marked “Vincent Mayer’s Söhne, Wien” also in gilt, with a functional exterior metal hinge, intact interior fabric hinge cover, and functional exterior metal push-button closure, with a black felted and recessed medal bed for plush seating of the award, measuring 63 mm (w) x 115 mm (l), the case in better than extremely fine condition.
